Capitalising on the huge success of The Scarlet Pimpernel, this Alexander Korda-produced sequel stars Barry K Barnes as the enigmatic saviour of aristocrats during the Revolutionary Terror. The final film directed by Austrian รฉmigrรฉ Hanns Schwartz, The Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel also stars James Mason, Sophie Stewart and Francis Lister as Sir Percyโs ruthless arch-enemy, Chauvelin.
The film is featured here in a brand-new transfer from the original elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. This transfer, however, has intermittent, decades-old film damage so the previously released archive transfer is also included as an alternative viewing experience.
Sir Percy, alias the Scarlet Pimpernel, is being pressured by his wife, Marguerite, to retire from his daring escapades. The French still want the Pimpernelโs head, however, and so set a trap for him involving the bold rescue of a Spanish actress and her lover!
The British Film
The British Film collection was launched by Network Distributing in April 2013 as part of a five-year plan to release over 450 vintage British films through a deal with Studiocanal, one of Europeโs leading distribution and production companies. Many of the films have never been available to own and will benefit from new transfers, affirming Network Distributingโs commitment to classic British cinema.
Titles include significant works from studios including Associated Talking Pictures, Ealing Studios, London Films, British Lion, Associated British Picture Corporation and EMI from the Studiocanal archive.
